Why Concrete Cracks — and Which Cracks Actually Matter

All concrete cracks. The job isn't preventing that — it's controlling where it happens.

Shrinkage is unavoidable

Concrete loses volume as it cures. A slab restrained by friction against the ground can't shrink freely, so tension builds until it relieves itself somewhere. That's not a defect or a mistake — it's what concrete does.

Control joints decide where

Those straight lines cut or tooled into a slab aren't decorative. They're deliberate weak points, and the slab is meant to crack along them instead of randomly across the middle. A crack running neatly down a control joint is the joint doing exactly its job.

Base failure looks different

Cracks from a failed base don't follow joints. They wander, they often show a height difference between the two sides, and the slab may move under load. That's not a curing issue — it's the ground underneath giving way, usually because it was never properly compacted or because water has been running under the slab and carrying material out.

Freeze-thaw and de-icing salt

Missouri cycles above and below freezing repeatedly through winter. Water that soaks into the surface expands when it freezes, and that pressure breaks concrete apart from the top down. De-icing salt makes it worse by driving more of those cycles. The flaking and pitting you see on older driveways is usually this, not a crack problem.

What good work actually controls

A properly compacted base, correct thickness for the load, reinforcement where the design calls for it, joints cut at sensible spacing and cut on time, and slope that sheds water instead of holding it. None of that prevents cracking — it decides whether the cracks are the ones you planned for.

Is it normal for a new driveway to crack?

Cracking along the control joints is normal and expected — that's what the joints are for. Wandering cracks that ignore the joints, especially with a height difference between sides, are a different matter.

How do I stop my concrete from flaking?

Keep de-icing salt off it, especially through the first winter, and use sand for traction instead. Sealing the surface helps keep water from soaking in. Once the surface has already scaled, it can often be repaired if the slab underneath is sound.

Why does my driveway crack in the same place every time?

That usually points to something under the slab rather than the slab itself — a soft spot in the base, water tracking through, or a buried utility trench that was never compacted properly. Repouring without addressing it produces the same crack again.
