Stamped Concrete: What It Costs and What It Takes to Keep
Stamped concrete gives you the look of stone or brick in a single poured slab. It costs more than a broom finish and it asks for maintenance a plain slab doesn't.
How it's actually done
Color goes in either through the mix or as a hardener worked into the surface. A release agent keeps the stamps from sticking, and the pattern gets pressed while the concrete is still workable. Timing is the whole job — stamp too early and the impression closes back up, too late and it won't take at all. After curing, the slab is cleaned and sealed.
What it costs relative to plain
Stamped work costs more than a broom finish because of the color, the release, the stamping labor, and the sealing. How much more depends on the pattern, how many colors, and how much detail work the edges need. Anyone quoting stamped work should be able to show you both numbers so you can compare directly.
Sealer is the real commitment
Sealer is what keeps the color from fading and keeps water out of the surface. Plan on resealing every few years depending on sun exposure and traffic. That's the honest difference in ownership versus a plain slab — it's not difficult or expensive, but it isn't optional if you want it to keep looking the way it did on day one.
Slip resistance is worth asking about
Stamped surfaces can get slick when wet, which matters around a pool or on steps. A non-slip additive can be mixed into the sealer. It's an easy thing to include and an annoying thing to retrofit.
Where it works best
Patios, walkways, front entries, and pool decks — anywhere the surface is visible and you want it to read as more than a plain slab. On a driveway it's less common, mostly because of the maintenance across that much square footage.

How long does stamped concrete last?
The slab itself lasts as long as any properly built concrete. What ages is the sealer and, with it, the color. Keeping up with resealing is what determines whether it still looks good in ten years.
Does stamped concrete crack more than regular concrete?
It cracks for the same reasons any concrete does — shrinkage, base movement, freeze-thaw. Control joints still apply, and on stamped work they're often placed to follow the pattern so they're less obvious.
Can you stamp over existing concrete?
Stamping is done in fresh concrete. An existing slab would need an overlay, which is a different product with different durability, and it's only sensible if the slab underneath is sound.
